Miguel Chevalier - selected as the Festival’s Artist-in-Residence - has been commissioned by IF: Milton Keynes International Festival and The Centre MK. Magic Carpets 2016 is a huge carpet of light that fill the floor inside Middleton hall over the 10 days of the Festival. Magic Carpets 2016 is accompanied by a special mobile sound created by the sonic artist Ray Lee.

Creating a magical world of colour and shape, people are invited to explore and walk on this kaleidoscopic interactive carpet.
Magic Carpets is inspired by the iconic shapes associated with Milton Keynes’ city-scape and other sources such as a digital universe.
Magic Carpets 2016 is composed of various “multicolored graphic scenes” following one another randomly and composed by thousand patterns like Pixels, line, cells, geometric patterns...
Patterns come alive, mix together and create new and surprising compositions. The lines cross in multiple combinations. Cells multiply in abundance, divide, merge, and proliferate, sometimes slowly, sometimes at a fast rate. Everything comes together, comes apart, and changes shape at top speed. Everything evolves to create an ever-changing universe.
Thank to sensors, the work is interactive. This fluid universe reacts to the motion of visitors. Their movements amplify the distortions of the virtual scenes under their feet. As they prepare to walk onto the Magic Carpets, ‘explorers’ can carry a silver sphere that generates ever-changing sound.
Magic Carpets create unprecedented visual experiences. The work create «"trompe l’oeil" effect, disturbing the perception of visitors while creating the sensation of a moving floor. It refers to Kinetic Art and Op Art, which conducted researches into movement, light or optical illusion and prefigured digital art.
This world of colors and shapes in motion leads us on an imaginary and poetic journey of optical illusion and play.
